Rwanda is steadily rebuilding and healing old wounds from the tragic genocide that took place in the mid to late 1990's. A visit to the Genocide Memorial in the capital Kigali is a powerful thought provoking reminder of its past. An important source of income to help aid in the countries redevelopment is tourism. Steep mountains and deep valleys cover most of the country which is prime habitat for primates. In Parc National des Volcans you can trek to see Mountain Gorillas, in Nyungwe National Park, rising above the shores of Lake Kivu, you can see 13 different species in all, including humankind's closest living relative the chimpanzee, as well as the handsome L'Hoest's monkey and hundred-strong troops of the delightfully acrobatic Angola colobus. Akagera National Park in the far south is big game country with elephant, giraffe, lion, leopard, hyena, hippo and more making this swampy savannah home.
