DAYS 1 - 4, Zanzibar
From the port city of Dar es Salaam we catch a ferry to Zanzibar - the ‘Spice Island’. Zanzibar was once one of the most important trading centres on the East African coast with slaves and spices historically two of the main exports. Time here is yours to enjoy Zanzibar’s treasures at your leisure. Stone Town is the capital and our entry point into this island paradise. Many people choose to spend at least one night here to explore the winding cobbled alleys, market stalls and Arabic architecture. For those wanting to simply relax there are Palm-fringed beaches and warm blue ocean waters to enjoy in the northern beaches.
DAYS 5 - 7, Northern Tanzania
Back on the African mainland we travel inland to the grassy plains in the north. In clear weather, you will see magnificent snow-capped Mt. Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak (5895m), as we drive towards Arusha, Tanzania’s safari capital. Meet the inhabitants of the neighbouring Meserani Snake Park before taking a guided walk to the local Masai village to learn about the impressive culture of these proud people.
DAYS 8 - 11, Serengeti, Nongorogoro Crater, Nairobi
Transferring to 4x4 vehicles, we depart for a two night/ three day game viewing excursion to the Ngorongoro Crater, Serengeti National Park and Olduvai Gorge. The Ngorongoro Crater is a World Heritage Site and contains the most concentrated population of wildlife anywhere in Africa. We descend the crater walls and enjoy game viewing in this spectacular setting. The ‘Big Five’ can be found within the crater as well as a huge array of other wildlife such as hyena, cheetah, wildebeest and many species of antelope. The open plains and clean horizons of the Serengeti epitomise many people’s image of Africa. Game viewing in this park is easier than most with 360 degree views of the savannah in most places. We camp in the wilds of the Serengeti to enjoy its atmosphereto the fullest. The sounds we hear at night are often as exhilarating as the views we see during the day! Returning to Arusha we enjoy last-minute shopping before a final day’s drive across the border into Kenya to Nairobi complete the tour.
