Troop to the Gorillas
Countries:
Uganda
Drive the lush mountains and scenery of what Winston Churchill called ‘The Pearl of Africa’ Relax, swim or canoe the second deepest lake at Lake Bunyonyi. Feel both the tranquillity and the rush of excitement whilst trekking the jungle to view the endangered Mountain Gorillas.
DAYS 1 - 2, Kampala, Kabale
Uganda, the ‘Pearl of Africa’, is a friendly and surprisingly green country. From Kampala, its vibrant capital, set amidst seven hills, we follow the shores of Lake Victoria, cross the equator and enter the Kigezi highlands, nicknamed the ‘Switzerland of Africa.’ Our destination is relaxing Lake Bunyonyi, a picturesque lake dotted with grassy islands. This ancient flooded valley is strangely devoid of fish despite being one of the deepest lakes in Africa.
DAYS 3 - 5, Gorilla Trek
Gorilla Trek Permit is paid for at the time of booking and the price is included in the price displayed on this page
We journey on, through long valleys of banana plantations and tiny villages, to the dense forest of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park (or forests to the south if necessary) for the most exciting part of our trip - a trek to see mountain gorillas. Bwindi is one of only two forests worldwide that are home to mountain gorillas and approximately half of them live here. On our exciting trek, local guides lead us through thick mountain jungle. It can be hard going but all the effort made is forgotten when we finally come face to face with these magnificent creatures. Gorillas are very sociable and live in families of 12-20 individuals, led by a dominant male (the socalled ‘Silverback’) together with several adult females and numerous young. We have a one-hour ‘audience’ with these gentle giants which promises to be a truly memorable experience. Group sizes on trek are kept small to minimise the impact on the sensitive natural habitat so we may therefore spend several days here allowing all members of the group to view the gorillas.Community visits and forest walks can be taken around this beautiful area when not trekking for gorillas.
DAY 6, Kampala
We travel back though Uganda’s rural heartland, passing small villages and farmland where avocado and pawpaw trees line our route. We arrive back in Kampala towards the end of the day where our safari ends.
