Almost
a quarter of Botswana has been set aside for conservation purposes
– explore the watery channels of the Okavango Delta to the
shifting sands of the Kalahari, and end this tour at the thunderous
Victoria Falls.
Day 1 - 2, Botswana, Khama Rhino Sanctuary
From Johannesburg, we head into Botswana to the Khama Rhino Sanctuary,
home to 23 of Botswana's last remaining rhinos and several other
mammal species, where we explore on game drives and on one evening
take a sundowner trip to a bird hide.
Day
3, Makgadigadi Pans
We venture on to the mystical Makgadigadi Salt Pans, the largest
salt pans in the world, covering an expanse of 37000 sq km. Once
an African superlake that dried up at least two thousand years,
today the pans glimmer white as far as the eye can see.
Day
4 - 6, Central Kalahari Game Reserve
The remote and unspoiled Central Kalahari Game Reserve is one of
the largest conservation areas in Africa, and with a size of 52
800 sq km, it’s larger than Denmark or Switzerland. Situated
right in the centre of Botswana, this reserve is characterised by
vast open plains, saltpans and ancient riverbeds, and we stay for
three nights in the park, and explore by 4x4 game viewing vehicle.
Day
7, Maun
From our remote wilderness we overnight in Maun, the small town
that is the gateway to the Okavango Delta.
Day 8, Damaraland
We head south through Damaraland, home to the elusive desert elephant,
which we may spot along the dry riverbeds and granite outcrops of
this stark but spectacular scenic region. On the Skeleton Coast
along the harsh Atlantic Ocean, we visit the Cape Cross Seal Colony
that is home to some 80,000 seals.
Day 9, Swakopmund
Swakopmund is Namibia's premier holiday resort, nestling between
the Namib Desert and the ocean. Explore the town, enjoy one of the
many good restaurants and bars, or indulge in one of the German
coffee and cake shops Swakop is famous for.
Day 10 - 13, Okavango Delta, Moremi Game
Reserve
Explore the pristine wilderness of the Okavango Delta with its reed
filled lagoons and tranquil waterways by foot and boat, and with
luck may spot some of the delta’s unusual wildlife and prolific
birdlife. The Okavango River begins life in Angola, and when it
reaches Botswana divides repeatedly into an intricate floodplain
of thousands of channels that spread to form an inland delta –
the only one of its kind in the world. Moremi is a spectacular wildlife
sanctuary within the delta, and as it has no fences, allows unobstructed
seasonal movement of game, and is a paradise for birds, hooved animals
and predators alike.
Day 14 – 15, Chobe National Park
From Moremi we take the back roads through the Savute Channel into
Chobe National Park, and explore the Savute marsh, famous for its
large prides of lion and abundant hyena. We reach the Chobe River
where there is the opportunity to go on a river cruise to view the
animals coming down for an evening drink.
Day
16 – 17, Livingstone
From Chobe we cross into Zambia and end the tour in Livingstone
next to the thunderous Victoria Falls. Here you can choose from
a number of adventure activities based around the falls and the
Bakota Gorge, and to see the mighty spectacle of the Victoria Falls
from the many strategic pathways and look-out points is the perfect
end to our safari.
