This
tour will show you the best parts of five countries, from the desert
landscapes of Botswana to the lush forests of Zambia, the tea plantations
of Malawi to the deserted beaches of Mozambique, and some of the
finest game reserves in Africa, including Chobe, Luangwa and Kruger.
Day
1, Johannesburg, Bptswana, Nata
From Johannesburg, we head directly to the Botswana border and spend
the first night in Nata, in an oasis- like camp on the edge of the
vast Makgadigadi salt pans.
Day 2, Chobe River
This morning we enjoy a short excursion onto the fragile crust of
the seemingly endless white salt pans, where during the rainy season,
huge flocks of water-birds are attracted to the pans, a sight not
to be missed. We then continue north to the mighty Chobe River where
we share a night at a unique island camp with the herds of elephant
that are attracted by the water.
Day
3 - 4, Zimbabwe, Victoria Falls
After a morning game drive in the Chobe National Park, we cross
the border into Zimbabwe to Victoria Falls, a bustling town close
to one of the natural wonders of the world - Victoria Falls –
an unforgettable spectacle where the mighty Zambezi River plummets
some 92m into the Batoka Gorge below. Victoria Falls is the ‘adventure
capital’ of Africa and there are a multitude of optional activities
to choose from.
Day
5, Gwabi, Lower Zambezi
Crossing the original railway bridge, we have a last view of the
falls before entering Zambia. Our journey today takes us through
southern Zambia and then down into the Lower Zambezi Valley to Gwabi,
where we will camp the night. Relax at the pool this afternoon in
preparation for the upcoming days of canoeing.
Day 6 - 8, Zambezi canoe safari
Travelling by canoe is the quietest type of game watching there
is and sitting comfortably in an 18 foot canoe watching crocodile
slink from sunny sandbanks into the water, or gliding nervously
past pods of hippo is a magical experience. We overnight under canvas
on a tranquil and deserted island for memorable nights under the
stars in the African bush.
Day
9 - 11, South Luangwa National Park
We spend a day crossing Zambia and spend two nights camping on the
banks of the river in the South Luangwa National Park. This is one
of the oldest and wildest parks in Africa, and famous for its high
concentration of leopard and elephant, and the Luangwa River is
home to thousands of hippos and crocs.
Day
12 - 13, Lake Malawi
Crossing the border, we continue to Lake Malawi, an impressive inland
freshwater sea. The snorkelling is a highlight, as are the sandy
beaches and friendly locals. We spend two nights here, camping literally
on the beach.
Day
14 - 15, Mulanje Massive
Turning south, we head for Mulanje, an impressive mountain of granite
rising some 600m above the surrounding forest and lush tea plantations.
We will spend two nights camping in the area, and will enjoy a hike
to the plateau from where the views are exceptional.
Day
16, Mozambique, Chimoio
Travelling via Blantyre, we enter Mozambique, and our journey takes
us through the Tete corridor, across the Zambezi River and alongside
the mountains that form the border with Zimbabwe. We camp wild tonight
in the remote region of Chimoio.
Day
17, Vilanculos
The tropical beaches of Mozambique have to be seen to be believed
- bays lined with coconut palms where the warm crystal water of
the Indian Ocean softly laps at the white sand, Robinson Crusoe
would feel at home here. We spend a night at a resort overlooking
the Bazaruto Archipelago and sample the local seafood.
Day
18 - 19, Inhambane
Our next stop is the small town of Inhambane, where we spend two
nights camping on the beach and enjoying the many activities on
offer. We also take a dhow taxi across the bay of one of the oldest
trading ports of Southern Africa.
Day
20 – 21, Chidenguele
Today we cross vast coastal floodplains and drive through forests
of cashew nuts to our last beach stop, Chidenguele, and spend two
nights at this remote beach resort.
Day 22 – 23, Kruger National Park
We pass through Mozambique’s capital, Maputo and cross back
into South Africa and make our way to the Kruger National Park.
With cameras and binoculars at the ready, we explore the untamed
wilderness on game drives, and hopefully we will see some of the
Big 5 - elephant, rhino, leopard, lion and buffalo. The impressive
atmosphere of the park enables you to understand why it holds such
a unique place amongst the world’s great game reserves.
Day
24, Johannesburg
We make our way back to Johannesburg where our tour ends, usually
arriving in the late afternoon.
