This
trek of Africa’s second highest mountain, Mt Kenya takes you
through the splendid high elevation scenery of mountain forest,
moorland and glaciers. We follow the Sirimon Route to the edge of
the ice and snow line on the equator.
Day
1, Nanyuki
From Nairobi, we travel to our first campsite near Nanyuki at the
foot of Mount Kenya, at 5199 metres, the highest mountain in Kenya
and the second highest in Africa after Mount Kilimanjaro in neighbouring
Tanzania. This first afternoon is at leisure or you have the option
to take a guided walk to the Mau Mau Caves, which were the homes
of the freedom fighters who fought the British colonialists in the
early 1950s.
Day
2, Trek
A short drive this morning takes us to the start of the Sirimon
Track and we start our trek (5 hours) to Old Moses Camp where we
overnight (3400m). Part of the mountain’s fascination is the
variation of flora and fauna as the altitude changes. The lower
slopes are covered with dry forest, and then above 2000 metres is
montane forest, and at 2500 metres a belt of bamboo. Higher up,
from 4500 metres to the snow line, are open moor land where giant
lobelia grows, and at the top permanent ice in eleven glacier lakes.
Day
3, Trek
We walk from Old Moses via the MacKinders Valley to Shiptons Camp
(5-8 hours) where we overnight (4200m).
Day
4, Trek
Early in the morning we climb Point Lenana (4985m) and on a clear
day should see Kilimanjaro in the south. From the top we walk back
down to the Meteorological Station where we spend the night (6-7
hours).
Day
5, Nairobi
We descend early in the morning to Naromoru Park gate where we meet
our transfer back to Nairobi, arriving in the late afternoon.
