Starting
from Windhoek, discover giant sand dunes, seaside fun, eerie Atlantic
coastline, the intriguing Himba people, and the vast and spectacular
Namib-Naukluft National Park, on a comprehensive 12 day overland
tour of Namibia’s highlights.
Day
1 - 2, Namib Desert
From Windhoek, we travel south into the Namib desert where we spend
the first night at our camp adjoining the Namibrand Nature Reserve.
This is a vast tract of wilderness with only the rocky mountains
and towering dunes to keep us company, and we enjoy our first dramatic
sunset over the desert. The following day, we will conduct extensive
guided walks and game drives in the reserve to learn more about
the desert fauna and flora.
Day
3, Namib-Naukluft National Park
Today we head to the scenically spectacular Namib-Naukluft National
Park, the oldest desert in the world with the highest sand dunes
on earth, some reaching over 300m. In the evening we head out to
a sand dune to watch the sun sink over the incredible sea of sand
with their endlessly changing colours and contrasting shadows, and
climb a giant dune at Sossusvlei.
Day
4 - 5, Swakopmund
We drive through the desert to the Atlantic coast, and reach the
German colonial town of Swakopmund, where you have a free day to
try one of the exciting adventure options from quad biking and sand
boarding in the nearby dunes, to sky diving or deep sea fishing.
Day
6, Spitskop
Today we head up the barren Skeleton Coast to the Cape Cross Seal
Colony, home to some 80,000 seals and the place where the Portuguese
mariner Diego Cão first set foot on the coast of southwest
Africa in the year 1486. Venturing inland, we will camp wild amongst
the boulders at the base of the impressive Spitskop Mountain.
Day
7 - 8, Damaraland, Palmwag
We head north across Damaraland, famous for its unusual rock formations
and sandy expanses, and if we are really lucky may encounter a desert
elephant. We visit the ancient site of Twyfelfontein to see the
bushman paintings and reach our rustic and remote camp at Palmwag.
The following morning we set off and venture deep into Kaokoveld
to meet with the Himba people, a nomadic tribe that lead traditional
lives.
Day
9, Cheetah Sanctuary
Our next stop is a cheetah sanctuary, where we will spend the afternoon
learning more about these animals and the circumstances threatening
their survival.
Day
10 – 11, Etosha National Park
We travel to Etosha National Park and explore the desert and semi
arid landscape on the hunt for the many species of game. This is
a vast reserve of over 20,000 sq km surrounding a central salt ‘pan’
that is seasonally full of water, and is home to some 114 mammal
and 340 bird species. We camp for two nights close to floodlit waterholes
that make for exciting night time game viewing if you can stay up
late.
Day
12, Windhoek
We journey back to Windhoek where the tour ends.
