Mountain
high valley low - the vast contrasting national parks of Kenya offer
the best game viewing with backdrops of lofty mountains and stunning
lakes.
Day
1 - 2, Samburu Game Reserve
From Nairobi, we travel north to the arid lowlands around the foothills
of Mt. Kenya, and reach the Samburu Game Reserve and camp for two
nights within the park. The wildlife is concentrated around the
permanent source of water in this area – the Ewaso Ngiro or
Uaso Ngiro River. The desolate and sandy landscape is the preferred
habitat for some mammals well-adapted to the harsh environment including
Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, and the gerenuk, an unusual
antelope that spends much of its time on its hind legs reaching
up to eat in the bushes.
Day
3, Lake Baringo
We travel through the Great Rift Valley and reach the freshwater
Lake Baringo, where we camp for the night and explore the lake shore.
Lake Baringo supports crocodiles and pods of hippo, but Lake Baringo’s
main attraction is the birdlife and the lake is the bird-watching
centre of Kenya.
Day
4, Lake Bogoria, Lake Nakuru National Park
Next is Lake Bogoria, a shallow soda lake set amidst beautiful scenery
that attracts thousands of flamingos and from a distance the surface
of the water appears bright pink. Next to the lake are steaming
hot springs and geysers. We continue south to Lake Nakuru National
Park, another shallow soda lake famous for its birdlife, and the
park is also home to many black and white rhino and if you’re
very lucky you may spot a leopard in an Acacia tree or a pride of
lion relaxing in the shade.
Day
5, Nairobi
After a final gaze over the game-filled savannahs, we head back
to Nairobi where the tour ends.
