Spend
a week on the sun-drenched Indian Ocean island of Zanzibar –
impossibly tropical with golden beaches and azure waters, with an
intriguing history of spices and slaves, and islands and forests
of unusual wildlife.
Day
1, Stone Town
You are met at either the ferry terminal or airport and transferred
to your centrally located Stone Town hotel. On the first afternoon
you are taken around the intriguing alleyways and back streets by
a tour guide, and visit the historical sites such as the House of
Wonders, an enormous palace on the waterfront, the museum, and Livingstone’s
house where the 19th century explorer once stayed before commencing
his last expedition on mainland Africa. We will also see the Sultan’s
Palace that was once used by the Omani sultans and their harems,
and the Arabian fort with its vast carved wooden doors.
Day
2, Stone Town, Spice Tour, Jozani Forest
We take a morning tour of the spice plantations where you will be
able to taste and smell the various spices that Zanzibar is famous
for and learn their uses. In the afternoon we visit the small Jozani
Forest, home to the very rare Red Colobus Monkey as well as bush
babies and countless species of birds and butterflies.
Day
3, Stone Town, swimming with dolphins
We travel to the south coast of Zanzibar to Kizimkazi village where
go on a boat excursion to see bottle nosed dolphins. The prospect
of seeing dolphins is excellent, and the more adventurous can get
into the water and swim and snorkel with them.
Day
4, Nungwi Beach
This morning we take another boat trip from Stone Town to nearby
Prison Island, once the location of a British prison. The island
is fringed with a lovely white sand beach and a coral reef, and
is home to giant tortoises, some of which stand at over a metre
tall. In the afternoon you are transferred from Stone Town to Nungwi
Beach in the north of Zanzibar.
Day
5 – 7, Nungwi beach
No visit to Zanzibar is complete without some time on the tropical
beaches. Nungwi is a mellow and laid back beach resort surrounded
by banana palms, mangroves and coconut trees. It’s a great
place to relax, park off in a hammock with a good book, and sip
a cocktail whilst watching the sunset over the Indian Ocean. For
the more active there is a range of water sports such as diving
and snorkelling. On the morning of Day 7, you are transferred back
to Stone Town where the tour ends.
