Families, solo travellers and game viewing in Kenya's best known national parks
The best of Kenya's National Parks - Samburu Game Reserve, Nakuru National Park and Masai Mara. Scenic views of the Great Rift Valley on route to Lake Bogoria and Lake Baringo
Days 1-2 Samburu Game Reserve We travel north past the foothills of lofty Mount Kenya and miles of pineapple plantations to the semi-arid Samburu region, arriving at our tented camp in time for lunch. The Samburu people live in this testing environment among succulent plant-life and fascinating wildlife that we search out on afternoon game drives in Samburu Game Reserve. We hope to spot animals specific to this area of Kenya, including reticulated giraffes, oryx, yellow baboons, dik diks, blue Somali ostriches and rare long-necked gerenuks if lucky. Birdlife here is prolific, especially around the water sources, including Buffalo Springs crater which we visit on game drives the following day.
Day 3 lake Baringo
We leave Samburu and head for Lake Baringo via the impressive Thompson’s Falls. We arrive at camp in the early afternoon and have time to enjoy the lake’s abundance of bird and aquatic life, including hippos, storks, pelicans and flamingos. In this picturesque setting amongst mountains and dormant volcanoes there is the chance to enjoy nature walks and boat trips around the lake’s scattering of grassy islands.
Day 4 Lake Nakuru National Park
This morning we travel the short distance to Lake Bogoria, the first of two soda water lakes we visit today. We enjoy a mid-morning game drive and check out the geysers and hot springs before heading further south through the valley to Lake Nakuru National Park. The giant soda lake here is famous for the flamingos that feed in large numbers on algae around the shore, producing a spectacular ribbon of pink. We spend the afternoon enjoying game drives in the park. As well as the lake’s birdlife, we hope to spot plenty of antelope, giraffes and playful monkeys. If lucky, we may even sight a big cat or two, sleeping under a tree or prowling the area at dusk.
Day 5 - 6 Masai Mara Game Reserve
We make our way up into the Masai land and across the Loita Plains to the world famous Masai Mara. While here, we enjoy game drives amongst its beautiful savannah and woodlands, with great opportunites to see the ‘Big Five’ and a wealth of other animals, birds and reptiles. We game drive in the early mornings and late afternoons to catch the wildlife at their most active, while we rest in our comfortable camp during the heat of the day. Between June and October it is sometimes possible to witness part of the spectacular wildebeest migration from the Serengeti’s plains in the south to the fertile Mara. If conditions allow, enjoy an optional balloon safari while here and view the Mara from above! Day 7 Nairobi We leave the Mara in the morning and make our way back to Nairobi where our tour ends on arrival in the afternoon.
