Day 1 – 13 Zanzibar - Volunteering
Upon your arrival at the airport or main port on Zanzibar Island, you will be met by a project representative, who will escort you to your new ‘home’ in Jambiani, a village located on the southern part of Zanzibar’s beautiful and quiet east coast. About an hour’s drive from Stone Town, Jambiani is a long village stretched along the coastline, with stunning and long whitesand beaches. Once you have settled in, you will be briefed on the itinerary of the orientation program. You will receive a detailed Welcome Pack, orientated to the area that you will be living in, as well as be shown the areas that you will be volunteering in. In the next few days, you will visit the project sites and be introduced to the relevant projects, key people and volunteer coordinators that you will be working closely with. Some of the duties you will be expected to carry our include:
- Gain teaching experience in various nursery schools and a tourism training institute
- Teach English to not only children and students, but also teachers and other community leaders
- Assist in improving educational facilities in the community
- Developmental games with pre-primary school children & sport-afternoons on the beach
- Playing a role in keeping the beach and village environment clean
Day 14 Transfer - Dar es Salaam
From your volunteering accommodation you are transferred to the main port in Stone Town to meet our Tour Leader for the safari section of your tour. We ferry to the mainland and camp to the north of Dar Es Salaam to overnight.
Day 15 – 17 Dar es Salaam - Arusha
Back on mainland Africa, we travel inland to the grassy plains of northern Tanzania. We pass by Africa’s highest peak, Mt. Kilimanjaro (5895m), as we drive to Arusha, Tanzania’s safari capital. Meet the inhabitants of the neighbouring Meserani Snake Park and take a guided walk to the local Maasai village to learn something of their traditional culture and way of life.
Day 18 – 21 Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater Transferring to 4x4 vehicles, we depart for a 2 night/3 day game viewing excursion to the Ngorongoro Crater, Serengeti National Park and Olduvai Gorge. Ngorongoro is a World Heritage Site and contains the most concentrated population of wildlife anywhere in Africa. We descend the crater walls and enjoy game viewing in the spectacular setting. The ‘Big Five’ can be found within the crater as can an array of other wildlife such as hyena, cheetah, wildebeest and many species of antelope. The open plains and clean horizons of the Serengeti epitomise many people’s image of Africa. Game viewing here is easier than most with 360 degree views of the savannah in many areas. We camp in the middle of the Serengeti plains to enjoy its atmosphere to the full. The sounds we hear at night are often as exhilarating as the views we see during the day! Returning to Arusha we enjoy last-minute shopping before a final day’s drive across the border into Kenya to Nairobi complete the tour.
