The Okavango delta and deserts. A great combination tour for solo travellers and the over 30's.
From Africa’s natural wonder Victoria Falls to Table Mountain – Cape Town – via the world’s oldest desert, the Namib and the tranquililty of the Okavango Delta, stopping at Etosha and Chobe game reserves– this is a superb introduction to southern Africa.
Day 1:
Today is a day of leisure to enjoy the activities in the area. Some of the optional activities typically available here include scenic flights, canoeing, game drives, elephant back safaris and river cruises. Or for the more extreme adventure lovers, why not try white water rafting, bungy jumping, gorge swinging or jet boating. Our accommodation also has a restaurant, pool, bar and riverside deck - so there is plenty of opportunity to relax and enjoy the tranquil surrounds and spectacular sunsets over the Zambezi River.
Day 2-3:
After breakfast we will be viewing the mighty Victoria Falls themselves and one of the nature wonders of the world .At over a mile wide and over 100 metres deep, the Falls produce the world’s largest curtain of falling water in the world. Up close they are formidable and at times of high water, the spray can be seen from 20 kilometres away, hence their local name Mosi au Tunya – the ‘smoke that thunders’. From Livingstone we have a short drive to Kasane, Botswana where we have time to settle into your accommodation and admire the view over the Chobe River. The following day we head for an early morning game drive in the Chobe National Park in search of elephant, buffalo and a variety of birdlife. We relax in the heat of the day before heading out for a sunset cruise on the Chobe River. Here you have the opportunity to see the abundance of bird life, hippos wallowing in the surrounding waters, the abundance of elephant that roam this National Park and if you are lucky you may get to see the elusive leopard in the hanging trees.
Day 4-6:
From Kasane we head for Maun, the gateway to the Okavango Delta, the most largest inland Delta’s in the world. This beautiful Delta is a natural wetland system spreading over 1,600,00ha of northern Botswana. The Okavango River begins life in Angola, and when it reaches Botswana divides repeatedly into an intricate floodplain of thousands of channels that spread to form an inland delta. We spend 1 nights camping on a remote island in the middle of a prestine wilderness of reed lagoons and tranquil waterways where experienced and knowledgeable ‘polers’ guide you through the maze of channels by mokoro - traditional dugout canoe, and by foot on a walking safari in search for unusual wildlife and prolific birdlife . This is a true wilderness experience!
Day 7-10:
Before we cross into Namibia we join the bushman for a guided walk to learn the traditional ways of living, bush medicines and bush foods before continuing to Windhoek, the capital of Namibia. The following day we head north to Etosha National Park for 2 days of static viewings and game drives. This vast reserve is over 20,000 sq km surrounding a central salt depression or ‘pan.’ Which is seasonally full of water and surrounding specially managed waterholes sustain some 114 mammal and 340 bird species. We make camp near a floodlit waterhole. Observers frequently see a range of night visitors including elephant, giraffe, zebra, even lion and hyena, making it one of the most memorable wildlife encounters in Namibia.
Day 11-14:
We leave Etosha and turn South to Damaraland, an area of eerie landscapes and barren rocky outcrops to Spitkoppe (sometimes known as the ‘Matterhorn of Africa’) and truly a spectacular site. This is where you have the opportunity to see some bushman painting. We head to Swakopmund, Namibia’s premier coastal getaway sandwiched between the rolling sand dunes and the ocean. We are here for 3 nights to enjoy the local café culture, museums, architecture or sample some of the adrenalin pumping optional activities such as quad biking, sand boarding and skydiving.
Day 15-16:
Today we head south to reach the Namib Naukluft Park. This vast desolate landscape is the world’s oldest desert and containing some of the highest sand dunes in the world over 300m high – this is an ideal spot to clamber to the top of one and see the sun rise over the empty desert. We continue deeper into the park for an optional nature walk across the saltpans and flat valley floors. Don’t forget your camera - the changing colours of the sand as the sun rises and sets throughout the day offer brilliant photographic opportunities. Continuing south we admire the awesome beauty of the Fish River Canyon. One of the natural wonders of Africa, some 500m deep and over 160km long, this is the second largest canyon in the world after America’s Grand Canyon.
Day 17-19: Finally we cross into South Africa spending a night on the Orange (Gariep) river before arriving into cosmopolitan Cape Town where we enjoy a culture visit and traditional lunch at a local township before heading to our final destination where our tour ends.
